I made stilts with my kids, Calvin and Claire. We started with two 2x4s and made the posts. Then we made the foot holds and attached them at 20 inches above the ground. This was too high, so we moved the foot holds down to 6 inches above the ground. With some practice over the summer, Calvin was able to walk for 9 steps. We decided to round over the handles on the shaper and make a large platform for you feet. This helped, and Calvin can walk across the lawn on the stilts. Claire needs a little more practice.
