In this video, I wood turn a large piece of port orford cedar into an outdoor stool.  I had trouble cutting the piece into a cylinder on the band saw, but I got it close enough to put on the lathe and turn.  It is a two ended stool with a carved out center section, making the stool look like a spool or giant wooden diabolo toy.

Three small projects

These three small projects are fixing a bookend, making a lathe tool stand, and making a radio stand.  Fixing the bookend entails gluing a wood carving back on to the vertical section of the bookend.  My son, Calvin, helped me with this.  The lathe tool stand consists of an upper and lower horizontal piece of birch plywood.  The upper piece has 2 inch holes drilled in it to hold the lathe tools.  The radio stand is a piece of tropical hardwood with a slot cut in it.  The slot is shaped to fit the contour of the radio and keep it from falling over.

I made a lathe tool stand today. I have needed something like this for a while as my tools have been scattered about is precarious positions.

Walnut and Birch Bowl

I turned a walnut bowl with a segmented rim.  I wanted to have the dark color of the bowl mix with a light colored rim. My thought was to do a zigzag pattern, between the two woods.  What I ended up doing was to make each segment contain two triangles of walnut with birch infilling.  I wanted to shape the bowl itself with a rounded rim to contrast the sharpness of the segmented pattern.

This project, building two new bathroom cabinets, is part of a bigger project to replace the plumbing system in our house.   In this video, I will install the cabinet in the master bathroom. I will also make and install the drawer fronts and doors, made from khaya, a type of African mahogany.  I use an edge banding tongue and groove router bit to make the edge pieces on the drawer fronts and doors.  I cut the hole for the sink and the plumber installed the sink.
